Honeycomb Design & Remodel's Most Frequently Asked Questions
What is design-build, and how is it different from hiring separate architects and contractors?
Design-build residential remodeling means one team takes responsibility for your entire project, from the first sketch to the final finish. Honeycomb's in-house architects, designers, and builders sit under the same (literal and figurative) roof.
That means every decision, from structural planning to cabinet hardware, happens collaboratively and intentionally. You don’t have to play messenger between an architect and a contractor. We design spaces that are buildable, and we build with the same level of design care that went into the plan. The result? Fewer surprises, smoother timelines, and a home that looks exactly how it was envisioned.
Will I really meet with Ati Williams in person, or just her team?
You’ll absolutely meet with Ati in person. She’s involved in every project! Honeycomb is a woman-led, design-build firm, not a production company.
Ati’s TV and Netflix background brings national recognition, but day to day, she’s right here in San Diego, reviewing design boards, troubleshooting tricky site plans, and talking through your ideas over coffee.
Do you have in-house architecture and design, or do you outsource those services?
Everything happens in-house. Honeycomb’s team includes licensed architects, structural engineers, and interior designers who collaborate from the start. That’s what makes our process so smooth.
In practical terms, it means your architectural drawings, interior design, and construction plans are aligned from day one. No finger-pointing, and no “that’s not my department.” One team designing one beautiful, functional, ready-to-build space.
Do you handle permits?
Our in-house architect and structural engineer manage the full permitting process. We’re fully licensed and well-versed in California’s building codes, so you can rest assured that the paperwork and plan are in order.
How long does a remodel take in San Diego?
Timelines depend on scope, permitting, and level of customization, but here’s what most homeowners can expect:
-
Kitchen remodel: About 9–12 weeks once construction begins.
-
Bathroom remodel: Typically 4–6 weeks.
-
Home addition or ADU: 4–6 months, including permitting.
-
Whole-home remodel: 6–12 months depending on complexity.
Design and planning are where we spend the most time, intentionally. The more thought that goes in upfront, the smoother (and faster) your build will go. It’s our favorite kind of math: more design time = fewer surprises later.
